Date of Issue: August 14, 2026
Summary:
In light of the recent forced closure of refugee camps in Tanzania and the alarming directives issued during regional diplomatic meetings in August 2026, Save the Refugee Youth (SRY) has issued a formal declaration. This document exposes the "revolving door" of displacement where returnees face state-sponsored land theft and intimidation inside Burundi, while simultaneously being denied the right to seek asylum in the region.
Key Issues Addressed:
Land Dispossession: Documentation of systemic land theft and threats by political-security networks inside Burundi.
The End of Asylum: Response to the August 12 meeting regarding the denial of refugee status in Uganda and the January 1, 2027, forced repatriation deadline.
Legal Protections: Application of the 1951 Geneva Convention, the Pinheiro Principles, and the 1969 OAU Convention.
